A road trip to Leh Ladakh is a dream for many travellers from Punjab. High passes, blue lakes and quiet monasteries make it unforgettable — but timing and preparation matter a lot.
Best months: May to September
The high mountain roads to Leh usually open from May and stay open till September or early October. June to August is the most popular time, with clear roads and pleasant days.
Two road routes
- Via Srinagar – Kargil: a gentler climb, good for acclimatisation.
- Via Manali – Sarchu: more dramatic passes like Baralacha La and Tanglang La.
Many travellers go in via Srinagar and come back via Manali to see both.
Acclimatisation is important
Leh is at about 3,500 m. Rest for the first full day after reaching, drink plenty of water and avoid heavy exercise. This helps prevent altitude sickness.
What to pack
- Warm jacket, cap and gloves — even in July
- Sunscreen and sunglasses
- Basic medicines and ID proofs for permits
- Power bank — charging points are few on the way
