Manali is one of the most loved hill stations for families from Punjab, and the drive from Jalandhar is a big part of the fun. With an early start and the right car, you can leave Jalandhar in the morning and be sipping tea by the Beas river the same evening.
The route from Jalandhar to Manali
The usual route goes via Hoshiarpur or Ropar – Kiratpur – Bilaspur – Mandi – Kullu to Manali. The distance is roughly 300 km and the drive takes about 8 to 9 hours with short breaks. The new four-lane highway and tunnels near Kiratpur and Mandi have made the trip much smoother than it was a few years ago.
Best stops on the way
- Kiratpur Sahib – a peaceful Gurudwara stop early in the trip.
- Bilaspur & Gobind Sagar lake – good views and roadside dhabas for breakfast.
- Mandi – the halfway point, with temples on the riverbank.
- Kullu – shawl shops and river rafting points before you reach Manali.
Best time to go
March to June is perfect for pleasant weather and sightseeing. December to February is the time for snow, but some roads beyond Manali may close. During the monsoon (July–August) the roads can be slippery, so keep extra time in your plan.
Which car should you book?
For 2–4 people, a sedan like Dzire or Amaze is comfortable and budget-friendly. For families with more luggage, an Innova Crysta is the best choice for hill roads. Groups of 8 or more travel happily in a Tempo Traveller or Urbania.
Tips for a smooth trip
- Start by 5–6 AM to avoid traffic and reach before dark.
- Carry light woollens even in summer — evenings get cool.
- Keep medicine for motion sickness for the hill section after Mandi.
- Book your taxi in advance during May–June and the Christmas–New Year rush.
